The Nickel Initiative


To remain globally competitive and secure the country’s spot in the global nickel trade, in 2019, PNIA launched The Nickel Initiative as a step towards harboring meaningful and productive discussions on the country’s nickel industry.

The Philippines is one of the top nickel exporters in the globe and fuels the manufacturing industries of various nations worldwide. The continue the momentum of discussing the best methods to attain further development of the industry both locally and internationally, the Nickel Initiative was created as a platform.

Nickel Initiative 2019

In 2019, PNIA spearheaded the Nickel Initiative 2019 (NI 2019) business conference which discussed the future of nickel consumption and how it will further drive development for the industry and for the country. This pioneering event which was attended by over 150 delegates from around the globe explored relevant issues and potential areas for collaboration among industries in the nickel supply chain. This event was made possible by collaborating with some of our partner industries and the academe: The E-vehicle Association of the Philippines, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the University of the Philippines. DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu and Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, along with key representatives of the business sector and diplomatic corps representing various institutions attended and supported the event. The culmination of this initiative is the development of the nickel industry roadmap.


NI 2019 paved the way for numerous discussions and partnerships with key stakeholders to further the development of the industry. This includes invitations from international and local bodies to discuss the nickel industry including Power Battery Application Committee of China Industrial Association of Power Sources (CIAPS-PBA) and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP).

In 2020, PNIA launched the Nickel Initiative Talks and Webinar Series, a series of webinars hosted on Zoom to facilitate stakeholder discussion on cross-cutting industry issues and to promote collaboration on areas of shared interest. PNIA has successfully hosted 3 webinars with various esteemed speakers from government covering topics such as the pandemic and the nickel industry, the environmental and enhancement programs of PNIA nickel miners, and promoting sustainable development through advancing the role of women in mining.

Nickel Initiative 2023

This 2023, we have once again invited key stakeholders globally to renew the discussion on the development of the nickel industry and its roadmap and look forward to sharing updates and developments on the Nickel Initiative 2023: Season Two very, very soon.
