The Nickel Initiative Stakeholders Roundtable Discussions

The Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA) convened three Nickel Initiative (NI) roundtable discussions (RTDs) from March to May 2023. Design Center champions bamboo as PH natural design language

“Our partnership with the mining sector is to help in the propagation of bamboo and using bamboo as a material on a horizontal application – it’s really finding more industries in which bamboo can be used. The partnership with the mining communities aims to close the supply-chain gap,” Matute said of Design Center’s Manila FAME exhibit co-presenter Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA) and event partner Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) in their efforts to transform post mining communities. 

Manila FAME 2018 Puts the Spotlight on the Bamboo Padyak

“Bamboo may very well be one of the ways we can heed the government’s challenge to ‘transform’ the industry for the better. We’re optimistic about it since studies have shown that it can reduce carbon emissions, prevent erosion, and even restore denuded lands,” said Philippine Nickel Industry Association President Dante R. Bravo in a press statement. Considering the plant’s sustainable nature, the bamboo industry would also create more opportunities for local communities to thrive economically.

Manila FAME takes new directions

The Design Center of the Philippines, in partnership with the Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA), explores additional applications of bamboo to showcase its versatility through the organization’s Bamboo Extreme program. Executive director of the Design Center of the Philippines, Ria Matute said that the current display focuses on bamboo and the “new concept of mobility.”
